President Donald Trump announced that a U.S.–Saudi civil nuclear agreement will only be approved if the Kingdom formally recognizes Israel and pursues a path that aligns with the Abraham Accords.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the deal would cover "civil nuclear transactions" and would prohibit enrichment, but it remains contingent upon Saudi Arabia’s participation in the Abraham Accords, a set of agreements that normalize diplomatic ties between Israel and Arab states.
Security analysts caution that the prospect of a new nuclear cooperation in an already volatile region could open the door to future proliferation risks. They argue that the region’s complex power dynamics might be destabilized by an expanding network of nuclear arrangements.
Earlier in 2020, Trump brokered the Abraham Accords, which led to normalisation between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Since then, Sudan and Morocco have also joined the pact, but Saudi Arabia has yet to do so.
