A makeshift shrine of flowers and condolence cards has been set up outside a Brown University building following a shooting incident that led to the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. The university and the surrounding community are grappling with the tragedy.
Ongoing investigations are seeking clues regarding the gunman, who remains at large after fleeing the scene of the shooting. Friends, teachers, and family members shared heartfelt memories of the deceased victims, MukhammadAziz Umurzokov and Ella Cook.
“Both were brilliant and beloved, as cherished members of our campus and by their families and friends,” stated university President Christina Paxson. “Our hearts are with them during this profound sorrow.”
Students and staff are actively planning memorial tributes for the victims, many of whom are still hospitalized. The planned events include an online interfaith prayer service and a larger memorial service upon the resumption of classes after winter break.
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
Umurzokov, 18, a freshman from Brandermill, Virginia, had aspirations of becoming a doctor, motivated by his own health challenges in childhood. With double majors in biochemistry and neuroscience, he was driven to help others, particularly students new to the United States. His sister expressed pride in his determination to follow through with his childhood dreams.
“He faced many hardships but aimed for excellence,” said his sister, Samira Umurzokova. “He was committed to making a difference.”
Ella Cook
Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Mountain Brook, Alabama, was an accomplished pianist and held leadership roles at the university. According to her mentor, she was an inspirational figure who uplifted those around her. Tributes from fellow students highlight her generous spirit and strong faith.
The Wounded Are Recovering
Of the nine injured students, most remain hospitalized with varying conditions. Updates on recovery have been optimistic, with one recovering soldier expected to make a full recovery following surgery. The community is uniting in support for those affected.
As the investigation continues and the community mourns, the resilience and strength exhibited by students, staff, and local residents stand as a beacon of hope during this dark time.
