SpaceX rocket spotted off Christmas Island coast

A 52‑metre Long Falcon 9 rocket was sighted drifting off the coast of Christmas Island after landing in the Indian Ocean following a test flight from Texas on 24 July.

Local tourist association chair David Watchorn said, 'I only thought at first the ships passing by were cargo vessels – until I realised it was a space rocket, a full‑size Falcon 9,' and described the moment as "incredible".

The sighting prompted a mix of wonder and curiosity among residents. Some slipped away from work to witness the gleaming spacecraft, while others moved boats closer to get a better look at the debris left behind.

Watchorn added, 'The more you explore it, the more fascinating the journey it has been. It’s not just a rocket; it’s a symbol of humanity’s reach into space.'

The incident highlights the growing presence of space industry traffic in remote regions and signals the need for clear protocols when spacecraft return to Earth outside established landing zones.
