In brief
The Intelligence and Security Committee has highlighted a worrying uptick in threats from Iran, including assassination attempts against dissidents and intelligence gathering on Jewish and Israeli targets in Britain.
Britain's parliamentary intelligence committee has released a sobering report detailing the increasing threats posed by Iranian espionage activities within the country. The document, made public on July 10, 2025, emphasizes the risk of assassination and intimidation directed at Iranian dissidents residing in the U.K., as well as the elevated vulnerability of Jewish and Israeli communities. The Intelligence and Security Committee, which consists of both appointed and elected members from Parliament, examines the efficacy of the nation's intelligence agencies. Their findings, based on thorough investigations and consultations with security officials over two years, reveal at least 15 incidents of attempted murder or kidnapping involving British nationals or residents since the start of 2022.While the report's evidence-gathering concluded in 2023, it pointed to a notable rise in danger well before current geopolitical tensions escalated in the Middle East. MI5's insights were particularly alarming, indicating that certain individuals who challenge the Iranian regime may be at increased risk in Britain.According to the report, Iran perceives operations against dissidents and attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets not as assaults on the U.K. but rather as necessary internal measures. The committee urged the British government and international allies to send a clear and bold message to Iran — that any aggression on U.K. soil would be met with a decisive response.
