American tennis star Taylor Townsend has apologised after coming under fire for comments she made on social media about Chinese food.
The 29-year-old, who is in Shenzhen for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, posted videos on Instagram discussing dishes featuring frogs, turtles, and sea cucumber, calling them the craziest thing I've ever seen. This led to backlash across various social media platforms.
Following the criticism, Townsend acknowledged her mistake, stating, There's no excuse, there's no words, and, for me, I will be better. She expressed awareness of her privilege as a professional athlete and her love for experiencing diverse cultures during her travels.
Previously, Townsend had shared her reactions to dishes served at a restaurant, describing some as bizarre and giving them low ratings. Her remarks, viewed as offensive by many, ignited discussions on the importance of respecting cultural differences.
As the situation unfolded, social media users urged her to understand and appreciate local customs. The hashtag, American tennis player publicly insults Chinese food, gained traction on platforms like Weibo, amplifying reactions to her comments.
Townsend's incident comes shortly after tensions during previous matches, indicating the scrutiny public figures face in both sports and cultural conversations.
She and her team are set to compete against Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
