In brief

North Korea's state media has reported the arrest of three shipyard officials following a botched launch of a navy destroyer that left the country's leader visibly frustrated. The event, intended to showcase the country’s naval advancements, turned chaotic when the vessel tipped over during the launch.

North Korea has taken significant action against three shipyard officials involved in a failed navy destroyer launch that embarrassed the regime and its leader, Kim Jong-un. Among the arrested are the chief engineer and key administrative managers from the Chongjin shipyard, where the incident occurred. State media revealed that Kim personally witnessed the attempt to launch the 5,000-ton warship, which ended in disaster when the vessel lost balance and tipped over. This public failure, marked by a large gathering organized to celebrate the naval capacity improvements, has been characterized by Kim as a "criminal act."Recent satellite images captured the ship on its side with its bow stuck in the launch ramp and its stern submerged, covered by tarpaulins to obscure it from surveillance. Kim has vowed to impose severe consequences over the incident, highlighting the regime’s stringent approach to military setbacks. Notably, this launch was meant to follow a successful one that took place just a month prior.
