Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer, but a 90‑minute operation on Tuesday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital removed a portion of his right lung. The Vatican said the elder pontiff is expected to remain in the hospital for roughly a week.

Pope Leo XIV’s surgery was reported by BBC Southern and Eastern Europe Correspondent Sarah Rainsford, who was in St. Peter’s Square as visitors sent well‑wishes. The news follows an earlier announcement that the Pope’s health had been monitored closely after a coughing episode.

Italian Cardinals and Vatican officials confirmed his stable condition post‑operation. The Pope, 71, is currently undergoing recovery at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
