In brief
In a shocking turn of events, the U.S. State Department has cancelled flights for thousands of refugees who had been cleared for entry into the United States. This decision comes just days before a self-imposed deadline set by President Trump, which aims to suspend the resettlement program that had been providing safety to those fleeing persecution. The abrupt suspension of these flights follows an executive order issued by Trump that indefinitely halts the refugee resettlement process.
According to government statistics, over 10,000 refugees were preparing to fly to the U.S., including Afghans who had faced significant danger due to their affiliations with the United States prior to the military's withdrawal from Afghanistan. This group also includes individuals from varied regions, such as Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. The sudden cancellation has left many refugees, who have invested time and effort into navigating a complicated legal process to gain entry into the country, facing dire circumstances. Angela Plummer, executive director of Community Refugee & Immigration Services based in Columbus, Ohio, expressed her sorrow at the situation, noting that many were expecting arrivals that have now been halted. Plummer remarked, “These are people who followed all the rules and who are now left in danger. It’s heartbreaking.”
