In brief

In a decisive move, the African National Congress (A.N.C.), South Africa’s ruling party, has upheld its expulsion of former President Jacob Zuma. This decision, announced on Friday, comes after Zuma's controversial actions in the wake of forming a rival political organization aimed at challenging the A.N.C.’s authority.

Zuma's expulsion in July was characterized by the party as a betrayal, particularly as he campaigned for the newly established party during the lead-up to the important May elections. Despite his remaining membership with the A.N.C., Zuma refused to sever ties and appealed his dismissal, seeking a personal hearing and transparency in the party’s internal procedures. The A.N.C. denied these requests, asserting that Zuma's actions represented a serious breach of discipline. The party's statement highlighted his disloyalty at a time when it sought internal renewal, reiterating its commitment not to allow any individual, regardless of past contributions, to undermine its integrity. Zuma’s history with the A.N.C. is significant; he has been a member since adolescence and was once imprisoned alongside Nelson Mandela. His past presidency, however, was riddled with accusations of corruption and scandal, culminating in his resignation under political pressure in early 2018. Following his ousting, Zuma attempted to reclaim his political position by forming his own party, uMkhonto weSizwe (M.K. party), which surprisingly gained traction in the parliamentary elections, securing 58 seats. This result reflected a growing dissatisfaction among the South African populace towards the A.N.C., amidst its dwindling support. Zuma insists that his aim is to reclaim control of the A.N.C., particularly from its current leader, President Cyril Ramaphosa. As the political landscape in South Africa continues to evolve, the A.N.C.'s firm stance against Zuma marks a pivotal moment in the country's complex political narrative.
