In brief

The Ligue 1 fixture between Paris St‑Germain and Lyon will take place on Monday evening instead of Sunday, following a 24‑hour postponement announced by the French football league. Authorities have barred the match to ensure security amid large-scale protests scheduled for Saturday, with the city preparing for police deployment across the capital. The rescheduled game will overlap with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London and the NFL match between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at Stade de France, which also demands significant police resources. Despite the disruption, PSG remains second in the league table while Lyon leads with 14 points.

PSG’s Ligue 1 clash with Lyon has been pushed back 24 hours to Monday as Paris prepares for another weekend of protests.

Originally set to kick off at 19:45 GMT on Sunday, the match at the Parc des Princes will now start at 20:30 on Monday. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) announced the postponement in a statement after police prohibited the fixture on its original date.

French authorities are mounting a major security operation for demonstrations scheduled for Saturday. About 550,000 people took part in protests last weekend over rising fuel prices, education standards and the cost of living, sparked by ongoing student demonstrations. Marches occurred in several major French cities, including Paris, and were marred by incidents of violence, looting and destruction.

Security is further strained by the Sunday NFL match between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France, an event requiring extensive police deployment. The game will be played in Saint‑Denis, roughly 10km from Place de la Bastille, where the protests are expected to begin.

The disruptions have already affected France’s domestic football schedule, with Toulouse’s Friday home game against Troyes moved to Sunday at the request of the authorities.

PSG, reigning French and European champions, sit second in the standings after seven matches, while Lyon leads with 14 points, ahead of PSG on goal difference.

The match will also be played on the same day as the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London. Injured PSG pair Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 winner, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among the contenders for the award.
