In brief
Amid an escalating humanitarian disaster, Sudanese paramilitary forces have attacked a medical clinic, claiming the lives of all nine staff members and adding to the death toll of at least 100 in an assault on the Zamzam camp.
In a harrowing escalation of violence, Sudanese paramilitary fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.) have murdered the entire medical team at the only clinic in the Zamzam camp, located in the war-torn El Fasher region of Darfur. The attack, which occurred on Friday evening, has been characterized as one of the bloodiest episodes in an already catastrophic civil war, which has prompted widespread concern from international aid organizations and the United Nations.According to reports, approximately 500,000 refugees reside in the Zamzam camp, struggling to survive amidst rampant famine. On Friday evening, R.S.F. fighters launched their assault after several hours of intense shelling, which destroyed homes and the camp’s primary market. Following this chaos, they turned their violence against the medical facility, eliminating all nine employees, including the head physician, as part of their brutal campaign against civilians.Kashif Shafique, the Sudan director for Relief International, confirmed that the staff had been given a warning to evacuate the day before but remained to care for civilians injured during the shelling. He reported that the medics—comprising five doctors and four drivers—had been shot while attempting to provide care in the besieged camp. This tragic incident underscores the dire conditions faced by humanitarian workers in conflict zones, where life-saving efforts are met with violence and jeopardy. The statement released by Relief International lamented the deaths, calling it “a profound tragedy” for the organization and for the vulnerable population relying on their services. The brutal attack has sparked calls for immediate international aid and action to address the escalating violence in the region and the urgent needs of those affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the plight of civilians trapped in Darfur remains a pressing concern for the global community.
