LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nick Reiner is set to be arraigned and enter a plea Wednesday in the killing of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

His scheduled appearance in Los Angeles Superior Court comes 3 1/2 weeks after the beloved actor-director and his wife of 36 years were found dead with stab wounds in their home in the upscale Brentwood section of Los Angeles, authorities said.

Nick Reiner, 32, the youngest of Rob Reiner’s four children, was arrested hours later and has been held without bail since. He was charged two days later with two counts of first-degree murder. He did not enter a plea during a brief initial court appearance on December 17, when he wore shackles and a suicide prevention smock.

His attorney, Alan Jackson, has given no indication of the plans for his defense, but most defendants plead not guilty at this stage. Jackson could also request another delay before entering a plea.

If Nick Reiner pleads not guilty, the case would typically move to a preliminary hearing to assess the evidence for trial, while his mental competence could also be a consideration.

A decade ago, Nick Reiner openly discussed his severe struggles with addiction and mental health after collaborating on a film loosely based on their lives, 'Being Charlie.' Rob Reiner, at 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were killed in their home, with autopsy results indicating multiple sharp force injuries, but no details on potential motives have been shared.

The counts against Reiner come with special circumstances for multiple murders and the allegation of using a dangerous weapon, which could affect sentencing. Prosecutors have not yet determined whether to seek the death penalty.

Rob Reiner was a prolific director known for iconic films like 'This is Spinal Tap,' 'Stand By Me,' and 'When Harry Met Sally,' which coincided with his marriage to Michele, a renowned photographer. The legal process will undoubtedly unfold as more information comes to light.
