NT Police Release New Photos 25 Years After Peter Falconio Murder

Police in the Northern Territory have unveiled previously unseen photographs from the 2001 investigation into the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio, hoping that fresh images could spark memories or a new tip‑off. Feb 14 2001 saw Falconio shot on a remote stretch of highway near Barrow Creek, about 186 miles north of Alice Springs. His body never recovered and the case remains unresolved.

The new sweep includes a full‑length shot of killer Bradley Murdoch during the original police interview, an image of Joanne Lees hours after the attack, and pictures of the orange Volkswagen Kombi van abandoned close to the crime scene. The images also capture Lees’ injuries, including scratches and bruises, providing a stark visual record of the ordeal.

NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole said the 25‑year anniversary is “a significant milestone” and urged the public to help bring the investigation to a full conclusion. He added: "While a murderer has been held accountable, this case can never be closed until Peter’s remains are found and his family can lay him to rest."

A reward of up to A$500,000 is offered for information leading to the discovery of Falconio's remains. NT Police remain committed to pursuing every avenue in pursuit of closure.
