In brief

Emergency services reported a tragic incident involving a cable car cabin that crashed in Mount Faito, southern Italy, creating chaos and challenging rescue efforts.

Four people have lost their lives following a catastrophic cable car accident near Naples, Italy. The incident occurred at Mount Faito where emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene. Authorities confirmed another individual suffered severe injuries and was being airlifted to a hospital for urgent medical attention. Reports suggest that one of the cables holding the cabin snapped while the car was weaving across the valley. Vincenzo De Luca, the regional president, confirmed the deceased were tourists enjoying the area. He noted overcoming poor weather conditions, including excessive fog, rain, and wind, was significantly hampering the rescue operations at an altitude of 1,500 meters. Earlier in the day, various Italian media reported that the cable car had initially stopped, leading to the rescue of passengers from another cabin positioned lower down. The mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, the locality hosting the cable car, revealed that it appeared a traction cable had given way during operation. "The emergency brake downstream functioned correctly; however, it was clear that the brake on the cabin approaching the summit did not engage as intended," he stated. He reassured the public that safety checks on the cable car system are routinely conducted, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. As authorities continue to investigate the crash and provide updates, additional information will be disseminated.
