In brief

In an effort to unveil the true essence of Rembrandt's celebrated painting, The Night Watch, the Rijksmuseum has initiated a monumental restoration project. Titled "Operation Night Watch," this extensive undertaking involves the meticulous removal of varnish that has obscured the artwork’s brilliance. Eight skilled restorers will perform this process in a dedicated, glass-enclosed area at the museum, allowing onlookers a unique glimpse into the artwork's restoration journey.

This restoration follows five years of rigorous research, employing innovative techniques like digital imaging and artificial intelligence. The varnish, which was applied during a 1975-1976 restoration, will be meticulously removed using specialized microfibre cloths and cotton swabs, revealing the painting’s true colors and details that have been dimmed over the years. The Night Watch, created in 1642 for Amsterdam’s Arquebusiers Guild Hall, stands as a masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age. Famed for its dynamic portrayal of a military company in motion, the artwork originally bore the title "Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banning Cocq." Over time, it adopted the moniker "The Night Watch" due to the dark varnish that gave the illusion of depicting a nighttime scene. However, its history is not without peril. The revered painting has endured multiple attacks over the decades, including knife slashes and acid spray incidents. Despite these challenges, the Night Watch has remained a significant attraction, drawing over two million visitors each year. The Rijksmuseum's director, Taco Dibbits, expressed enthusiasm for the restoration, emphasizing its opportunity for public engagement and the chance to uncover significant historical details hidden beneath the varnish. The adventure of "Operation Night Watch" promises to be a riveting experience for art lovers and historians alike, shedding light not only on the painting but also on Rembrandt’s extraordinary artistry. In a captivating mix of science and art, this project aims to restore the integrity and history of one of the world’s most iconic paintings for generations to come.
