In brief

As the largest American air installation in the region, Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar plays a pivotal role in U.S. military operations, hosting around 10,000 troops and serving various strategic missions since its establishment.

The American air base in Qatar, known as Al Udeid, was hit by Iranian missiles earlier this week, underscoring rising tensions in the region. This significant installation, home to about 10,000 troops, functions as the regional headquarters for U.S. Central Command and has been a cornerstone of military operations in the Middle East since its inception following the September 11 attacks.Established in 1996, Al Udeid Air Base has been integral in various military campaigns, originally serving as a launch point for operations against the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Over the years, it evolved into a key U.S. air operations hub in the Middle East, coordinating missions during prolonged conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and more recently, flights against the Islamic State group in Syria. In addition to its combat role, Al Udeid also served as a central evacuation point during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, facilitating the safe passage of tens of thousands of Afghans and American personnel. The base's Combined Air Operations Center is crucial for projecting U.S. air power across 21 nations, extending from Northeast Africa to Central and South Asia. The Qatari government, viewing the U.S. military as its primary defense partner, has invested upwards of $8 billion to enhance the base's capabilities, which also partners with the British Royal Air Force. Command facilities for U.S. special forces are also operational at the site, emphasizing its strategic significance for American military endeavors. In a notable visit last month, former President Trump addressed service members at the base during a tour of Gulf States, praising Qatar’s military purchases from the U.S. and sharing personal anecdotes from his presidency. The base’s precise location was once highly confidential until publicly disclosed by then-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in 2013, marking a shift towards transparency regarding U.S. military operations in the region.
