Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) is actively investigating the details surrounding the aircraft and its crew, seeking to uncover the tragic circumstances of the accident. According to statements from the pilot, who managed to escape, a fire ignited in the balloon's basket, prompting him to lower the craft while urging passengers to jump to safety. Some were able to leap from the balloon, but due to the increasing flames and weight, it ascended again before crashing down after losing suspension.

The victims included two couples, a mother and daughter, an ophthalmologist, and a figure skater. The survivors have been transported to local hospitals for treatment. The ballooning company, Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, has suspended its operations indefinitely while affirming that it adhered to all ANAC regulations and had no previous accidents.

In a video message, Mello, currently on an official trip in China, expressed the state's commitment to providing aid and support to the families affected by this tragedy. He stated, “We are in mourning... But the important thing now is to do everything possible to reach out to the people and the families.” Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also extended his condolences, promising federal support and the coordinated rescue efforts involving state and municipal authorities. Praia Grande is well-known for its ballooning attractions and is a favorite among tourists.
