In a recent interview with the BBC, Nigerian Afropop sensation Tems candidly expressed her frustrations regarding the respect for women in the music industry. The two-time Grammy award-winner reflected on her early days, noting that she often struggled to gain the credibility she deserved. "There's always a cost. There's always a price that you pay," she revealed, indicating that many sacrifices were expected from women in the sector, sacrifices she wasn't willing to make.

Despite the global rise of Afropop, with icons like Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid leading the way, the male dominance of the industry remains palpable. Female artists have faced immense challenges, with notable figures such as Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade vocalizing their struggles. Earlier this year, Tems took to social media to fight back against online body-shaming, stating, "It's just a body," celebrating self-acceptance and resilience.

With a vision to redefine how women perceive themselves in music, Tems has launched The Leading Vibe Initiative. This project aims to foster opportunities for young women in Africa's burgeoning music scene, commencing with workshops and masterclasses in her hometown of Lagos. Tems stated her commitment to ensuring access to platforms for future female artists, mentioning, "I promised myself that if I get to a place where I can do more, I will make this initiative."

When asked about advice for aspiring female musicians, Tems underscored the importance of clarity in one’s goals and values. "What are the things that you wouldn't do for fame?" she posed, encouraging them to stay true to their craft. Five years since her debut EP, Tems has proven her dedication, collaborating with global stars like Beyoncé, amassing over 17 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and recently announcing her support role for Coldplay’s sold-out Wembley Stadium concerts.

Beyond her music career, Tems has ventured into football and is now a part-owner of the US team San Diego FC, showcasing her diverse interests. This partnership, facilitated by Pave Investments, marks her as a role model who believes in pushing boundaries and exploring the unconventional.

Firmly believing that one should always remain authentic, Tems remarked, "Even when people tell you to change your sound… I was okay with that." As she continues to conquer barriers and inspire, Tems is not just an artist but a testament to resilience and innovative thinking in not just music, but in all her endeavors.
