In brief

José Rubén Zamora, a prominent figure in journalism, faces new hopes as he transitions to house arrest following a lengthy imprisonment, a reflection of growing concerns regarding democratic integrity in Guatemala.

After enduring more than 810 days in an overcrowded prison cell, José Rubén Zamora, the respected founder and publisher of elPeriódico, is set for release to house arrest. This significant development comes after a judge determined that Zamora had languished without a trial for too long and posed no flight risk. "I have never wanted to flee Guatemala, which is also my country, not just the country of the authorities in power," remarked the 68-year-old journalist during the court session. Zamora’s legal troubles stem from his conviction last year on charges of money laundering, for which he received a six-year prison sentence alongside a hefty fine of about $40,000. He has consistently denied the accusations, arguing they were politically motivated and retaliation for his investigative journalism that exposed corruption in the Guatemalan government.Under the new conditions of his release, Zamora will remain at home and must report to authorities regularly. His prior trial was marred by numerous irregularities and is widely recognized as a deliberate attempt to suppress critical journalism, especially amidst the controversial administration of former President Alejandro Giammattei.
