The FBI Director Kash Patel's personal email account has been hacked by an Iran-linked group, the agency has confirmed.

A group, known as the Handala Hack Team, shared Patel's purported resume and photos of him on its website on Friday along with a statement that says: This is just our beginning. The FBI said it was aware of malicious actors targeting Patel's email information, noting that the information in question is historical in nature and involves no government information.

The agency is offering up to $10 million for information that helps in identifying members of the Handala group. Iranian-backed hackers were reported to have breached Patel's private communications in 2024, weeks before he was appointed to lead the FBI. It remains unclear whether this breach is different from the one claimed by Handala.

Photos claimed to be taken from Patel's email account have been circulating on social media, showing him in various settings, including with luxury items and at social events. The BBC has not independently verified the leaked documents.

Cynthia Kaiser, a senior vice-president at Halcyon Ransomware Research Center, indicated that the recent release likely comes from a historical breach, suggesting that these emails may be recycled from earlier compromises.

The Handala group claims their access demonstrates vulnerabilities in the FBI's supposed security. Cybersecurity experts noted that personal accounts typically lack the protection of government systems, making them attractive targets for such attacks.

As part of ongoing operations, the U.S. Justice Department has recently seized several Handala domain names associated with hacking schemes linked to Iran. The group’s actions may be seen as retaliatory, not only for the website seizures but also in response to a reward offered by the FBI for information on these malicious activities.

The Handala group also claimed responsibility for a prior cyber-attack on a U.S. medical technology firm, Stryker, indicating a pattern of targeting U.S. entities. This incident adds to the escalating concerns regarding cybersecurity and the implications of international cyber warfare.
