In brief
After undergoing a successful craniotomy to treat a brain bleed, Brazil's President Lula is reported to be in stable condition and recovering well.
Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is reported to be recovering well following surgery for a brain bleed. The 79-year-old leader was hospitalized in Brasília after suffering from a severe headache, which led to an MRI scan that revealed the intracranial hemorrhage. This condition stemmed from a fall in his bathroom at the presidential residence back in October. The president was subsequently transferred to the prestigious Sírio-Libanês hospital in São Paulo, where doctors performed a craniotomy to remove a section of his skull and relieve the pressure from the bleeding. According to medical staff, Lula emerged from the surgery conscious and lucid, and there were no indications of any brain injuries or adverse effects.During a local news conference, the medical team stated that Lula's condition is stable and he is effectively communicating with them. While the prognosis is promising, they mentioned that he would likely remain in the intensive care unit for the next 48 hours. If his recovery progresses as expected, he might be able to return to Brasília by the following week. While the president is hospitalized, Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin has stepped in to fulfill his duties, including a scheduled welcome for the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, who is arriving in Brazil today. The doctors confirmed that the bleeding was a consequence of the fall, explaining it is not unusual for symptoms related to such injuries to manifest later on.Lula’s incident occurred on October 19, when he slipped and hit the back of his head, requiring five stitches. His doctors advised him to cancel a planned trip to Russia for a BRICS summit that was scheduled to take place soon after. After a brief recovery period, he resumed his duties but has now faced further medical challenges.Brazil’s leader has been in office since January 1, 2023, after a tightly contested election against the former president, Jair Bolsonaro. Throughout the campaign, Lula humorously asserted he had “the energy of a 30-year-old.”
