In brief
As the nation grapples with diminished consumer demand and a burgeoning property crisis, the Chinese government aims to invigorate economic activity by encouraging citizens to trade in old kitchen appliances for generous discounts on new purchases.
China has recently added various kitchen appliances, including microwave ovens, dishwashers, rice cookers, and water purifiers, to its trade-in program, which offers discounts of up to 20% on new goods. This initiative seeks to address ongoing economic challenges, primarily sluggish consumer demand and an escalating property crisis. Previously, the trade-in scheme included electronics such as televisions, phones, tablets, and hybrid vehicles. The government has allocated 81 billion yuan (approximately £8.9 billion or $11 billion) for the consumer goods program this year, with hopes that it will bolster spending in key sectors. Authorities have reported that the new policies are yielding "visible effects" in terms of increased sales of large-ticket items, such as home appliances and automobiles. However, some economists remain skeptical about the true impact of these measures on overall consumption levels. Dan Wang, a China-based economist, argues that these initiatives alone may not significantly uplift consumer spending. Similarly, Harry Murphy Cruise, head of China economics at Moody’s Analytics, highlighted the limited success of the schemes, noting that while they aided specific goods, they haven’t spurred a general increase in spending. As China grapples with rising challenges for exporters, the government continues to implement a series of measures designed to support its domestic economy. A recent meeting of Chinese officials emphasized the necessity for "vigorous" efforts to enhance consumer spending amid concerns over a potential 60% tariff on Chinese exports by President-elect Donald Trump, set to take office soon. Additionally, the country is anticipated to announce its 2024 economic growth figures next week, with projections hovering around 5%.
