From the moment he seized power in September 2021, Guinea's Mamadi Doumbouya struck an imposing figure. Just 36 years old at the time, the broad-shouldered colonel, standing at well over six feet (1.8m), wearing military fatigues and a red beret, made a memorable impression announcing the coup. Declaring the government of ousted President Alpha Condé as dismissive of democratic principles, Doumbouya took control and has led as interim president for more than four years.

Now at 41, he is on the brink of being sworn in as the elected head of state this Saturday, having won 87% of the December vote amidst a diminished opposition. Yet, critics like ex-Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo, now exiled, have dismissed the electoral process as a charade generating fabricated results.

While Doumbouya enjoys some popular support, doubts linger regarding his democratic credentials, particularly as some political parties have been banned, activists have disappeared, and media outlets have been censored.

Doumbouya's image has shifted over time; he now often sports tracksuits and casual attire in public appearances, a deliberate move to connect with citizens and portray himself as a man of action. Analysts suggest this tactic aims to distance him from his military coup origins while aligning himself with civilian leadership.

Behind the façade, however, analysts argue that Doumbouya's military roots may still deeply influence his governance. Concerns remain regarding the treatment of opposition and the handling of civil freedoms. Activists and human rights organizations continue to seek answers for missing persons, including prominent activists.

Nevertheless, Doumbouya's presidency comes at a pivotal time, as his administration makes significant moves towards resource nationalism and infrastructure development, particularly surrounding the lucrative iron ore reserves in the Simandou region. His approach could redefine Guinea's economic landscape while the effectiveness of such policies will play a critical role in shaping his presidency.
