In brief

While the ceasefire remains intact, armed confrontations and community tensions in Suweida province persist, leaving many on edge and highlighting the precarious balance in the region.

The BBC has managed to approach the southern Syrian city of Suweida, where a fragile ceasefire is currently in effect following violent clashes between Druze and Bedouin forces that have claimed over 1,000 lives. Our team was able to come within six miles of the city, faced with warnings of Druze snipers in the area, indicating the ongoing danger. The journey led us through deserted Druze villages now under Syrian government control, marked by burned buildings and scattered shell casings. Groups of Syrian soldiers rested along the route, while heavily armed government security personnel were present. This cessation of hostilities was enforced four days ago by the Syrian government, aiming to quell a week-long spiral of sectarian violence. Although the ceasefire is in place, its stability is uncertain. Tensions remain high, with armed Bedouin fighters, characterized by their red and white headscarves, gathering defiantly along the roadside, openly expressing their willingness to resume fighting if necessary.Bedouin leaders voiced their intent to retaliate if Druze factions do not uphold the ceasefire agreement, with some demanding the release of injured members they consider hostages. Allegations have also surfaced that Syrian government forces colluded with the Bedouin, facilitating human rights abuses against the Druze community.Simultaneously, the Syrian Red Crescent has begun evacuating some of the wounded from Suweida. Reports from Deraa's main hospital recounted harrowing accounts from injured soldiers who described scenes of unimaginable violence. Medical personnel are struggling to provide adequate care due to shortages of supplies and ongoing dangers from sniper fire, complicating efforts to facilitate medical evacuations. As the region endures the ramifications of the recent clashes, questions linger about the prospects for a stable future in a country long marred by conflict. Local officials have called for unity among communities to confront the challenging path ahead, although signs of peace remain elusive as sporadic violence continues to loom over Suweida city.
