In brief
The United Nations warns that residents of El-Fasher, Sudan, are on the brink of starvation amidst an ongoing civil war and humanitarian crisis.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has raised alarms about the famine conditions in El-Fasher, a city in the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan. For over a year, the essential food supplies have been unable to reach the city due to ongoing military conflicts, particularly surrounding confrontations between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).Around 300,000 residents are currently trapped in El-Fasher, which has been under siege by RSF fighters for nearly 16 months. The WFP's report of deteriorating conditions comes in light of troubling death tolls being reported by local activists, further emphasizing the desperate situation faced by residents due to starvation. Sudan's civil unrest, accentuated by a power struggle initiating in April 2023, has led to one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history. The alarming statistics reflect that, as of July, 38% of children under five years within and around El-Fasher are suffering from acute malnutrition. Prices have soared due to rampant food shortages, forcing families to resort to consuming animal fodder and food waste simply to survive. As Eric Perdison, the WFP's director for the region, stated, “Everyone in El-Fasher is facing a daily struggle to survive.”Sondos, an eight-year-old girl who fled El-Fasher with her family, epitomizes the plight of innocent civilians: “In El-Fasher there was a lot of shelling and hunger. Only hunger and bombs.” Despite the WFP having food assistance ready for delivery, they await a crucial decision from the RSF concerning a potential ceasefire that would allow aid to reach those in desperate need.Furthermore, the UN has called for a humanitarian pause in fighting to enable the safe passage of food supplies, a proposal currently met with reluctance by the RSF, who express skepticism towards the intentions behind the ceasefire. This ongoing strife has displaced over a million residents since the conflict's escalation, claiming an untold number of lives and leaving many more grappling with trauma and starvation. In conclusion, urgent international support and humanitarian access are critical as the situation grows increasingly dire with each passing day, threatening countless lives, particularly those of vulnerable children struggling amidst the chaos.
