French Court Jails Man After Threatening Teacher During School Incident

A 47‑year‑old father in the Le Fauga village was sentenced to six months in jail after threatening to behead a primary‑school teacher who had disciplined his son on a recent school morning.

The incident unfolded in the small community of around 2,600 people just outside Toulouse. After the boy was punished for disruptive behaviour, the teacher may have moved him to another class, where he continued to misbehave. The father waited outside the school and, according to the mayor, threatened the teacher with “the sight of her head if it were a man”. The threat was later recorded and a judicial complaint was filed.

The court, hearing the case on a fast‑track Thursday, highlighted the seriousness of the remarks, citing the fresh memory of the 2020 murder of Samuel Paty. The judge refused the prosecutor’s proposal for six months of house arrest, demanding prison time, and ordered the defendant to complete a citizenship course and not contact the victim or approach the school.

French Education Minister Edouard Geffray condemned the threat, stating that “No teacher should be afraid to do their job”. He noted that the case would be one of the first uses of the new law passed in July to protect staff from significant risk in schools. The boy and a younger sister may now be transferred to another school outside the village.

The teacher, a woman in her 50s, has been granted official protection and is currently on sick leave, deeply shaken by the threat.
