A fierce blaze broke out on the second floor of a restaurant‑apartment building in Thusis, Switzerland, quickly overpowering the structure and leaving five people missing and eight injured.
Graubünden cantonal police announced the incident just after midnight local time and said around 100 firefighters were dispatched. Because the stairwell collapsed, rescuers had to open the roof with a crane to gain access to the trapped residents.
Fourteen occupants escaped the fire, but two suffered serious wounds, two had moderate injuries and four had minor cuts or burns. The injured were transported to hospitals in neighbouring Chur, Thusis, Ilanz and Zurich.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by police and the public prosecutor’s office, who are examining possible electrical faults or other origins.
