Brazilian police have announced a shocking twist in the ongoing political saga that engulfed the nation in 2022. Several individuals associated with an elite army unit were arrested on Tuesday and are accused of conspiring to assassinate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who won the presidential election against Jair Bolsonaro during a tightly contested race. According to reports, among the detained are four members of the military, including a former high-ranking aide to Jair Bolsonaro, as well as a federal police officer. Authorities allege that these individuals leveraged their extensive military training to carefully devise a scheme to eliminate Lula and his vice-presidential candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, who were targeted for assassination on December 15, 2022. The plot also included plans to eliminate a Supreme Court justice, although the identity of that justice has not been released. The police statement detailed that the conspiracy was methodically orchestrated, outlining the necessary human and military resources needed to execute their plans. In response to these allegations, a lawyer representing Jair Bolsonaro denied any involvement from his client, asserting that Bolsonaro "never agreed or participated in any type of plan of this nature." The lawyer, Paulo Cunha Bueno, emphasized that Bolsonaro had no prior knowledge of these alleged actions. While the investigation unfolds, it remains unclear whether the assassination plot against Lula and others was successfully thwarted or subsequently abandoned. The implications of this scandal could ripple throughout Brazil's political landscape as the country grapples with the consequences of such a serious breach of security.
