Eight Sentenced to 450 Years in Prison Over Anti‑ICE Riot

Eight individuals who U.S. prosecutors say are connected to the anti‑fascist movement, or Antifa, received a total of 450 years in federal prison for a violent confrontation outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Texas. The incident took place on July 4 last year and involved shooting attempts, fireworks, and vandalism that targeted police officers and the facility.

The longest sentence was 100 years, handed to a former Marine Corps reservist who was convicted of attempted murder of a law‑enforcement officer. The remaining defendants received sentences ranging from 30 to 70 years. Chief among them was Benjamin Hanil Song, who prosecutors describe as the group’s leader and who faces a minimum penalty of 20 years.

The Justice Department noted that the North Texas Antifa Cell began by launching fireworks and throwing weapons at the property and later vandalising vehicles and a guard kiosk. The defendants were charged with a wide range of offenses, including rioting, using weapons and explosives, providing material support to terrorists, and obstruction of law‑enforcement duties.

In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche condemned the "assault on democracy" that resulted from the riot, while speaking for the department. Families of the charged defendants criticized the severity of the sentences but the court affirmed the lone emphasis on protecting federal facilities and officers.

Public protests at immigration facilities have surged, with Democratic lawmakers often visiting sites in the hope of influencing policy. Those who attended the Prairieland demonstration claimed it was a peaceful “noise demonstration” and not intended to be violent, but the authorities and prosecutors concluded otherwise. The defendants maintain that they were merely supporting detained immigrants.

The designation of Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization—made public by President Donald Trump in 2025—remains controversial. Critics argue that Antifa is an ideology rather than a formally organized group with a leadership structure, which may limit the fairness of criminal charges.
