In brief

President Trump's recent statements regarding “active talks” with China suggest optimism amid a trade war, yet Chinese officials assert no negotiations are taking place. The disconnect has caused financial turmoil and confusion about the status of U.S.-China relations.

The article text follows.---President Trump, amid a turbulent trade war with China that has unsettled financial markets, claimed on Friday that he has been discussing tariffs with Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, these assertions were immediately contradicted by Chinese officials, who insisted that no negotiations have occurred. In an interview with Time earlier in the week, Trump mentioned receiving a call from Xi and claimed that his team is in “active talks” regarding trade. When questioned by the press at the White House on Friday, the president reiterated that he had numerous conversations with Xi without clarifying whether any discussions had happened since the recent tariffs were imposed.Trump’s remarks seem to be an attempt to convey progress in U.S.-China relations to reassure financial markets, which have recently experienced volatility, with the S&P 500 dropping 10 percent since his inauguration. However, Chinese officials firmly rejected Trump’s claims, with Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, stating, “China and the U.S. have not held consultations or negotiations on the issue of tariffs.” He added that it is essential for the U.S. to engage in thoughtful dialogue grounded in equality and respect rather than threats. On Thursday, He Yadong, a representative from the Chinese Commerce Ministry, reiterated that “there are no economic and trade negotiations between China and the United States,” deepening uncertainty about a potential resolution to the ongoing trade conflict.
