There are casualties and injuries related to the explosion, but the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency isn’t sharing any numbers because the Department of Health hasn’t confirmed them, spokesperson Kristin Coulter said by telephone.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis stated that there were “several people at this time unaccounted for.”
“We are trying to be mindful of families and that situation,” Davis added.
It remains unknown how many individuals were present in the building at the time of the explosion.
The strength of the blast was felt by residents in Lobelville, a 20-minute drive away, causing their homes to tremble.
“I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it,” Gentry Stover recounted. “I live very close to Accurate and I realized about 30 seconds after I woke up that it had to have been that.”
Manufacturing plant specialized in explosives
The cause of the explosion is still being determined.
Public records indicate that the company has supplied various types of explosives to the U.S. military, including dynamite, landmines, and explosive powders used in large-caliber shells.
This manufacturing facility spans 1,300 acres in Bucksnort, a rural community approximately 60 miles southwest of Nashville, and comprises eight buildings dedicated to the manufacturing, storage, and research of explosives for military, aerospace, and commercial demolition markets.
Accurate Energetic Systems markets explosive products designed for diverse applications, ranging from structural demolition to strategic breaching operations. Products noted on their website are designed and approved by the Department of Defense for use by foreign military units, police forces, and commercial customers.
The company utilizes its extensive campus for testing explosives, measuring explosion velocities and impacts on the surrounding environment under different conditions. It is indicated that the facilities can safely accommodate explosives weighing up to 35 pounds and conducts daily tests.
