In brief

As the UN World Food Programme (WFP) announces the depletion of its food stocks in Gaza, the humanitarian situation deteriorates, with severe shortages threatening the lives of millions. Hot meal kitchens in the area, serving around one million daily meals, are expected to run out of supplies shortly. Following Israel's blockade, initiated on March 2, needed assistance has dwindled, leading to skyrocketing food prices and grave malnutrition among the population. The crisis calls for an urgent end to the blockade and restoration of humanitarian aid delivery.

The article text:The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that it has exhausted all of its food supplies for Gaza, already strained by Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid which has lasted for seven weeks. "Today, WFP delivered its last remaining food stocks to hot meal kitchens," warned the agency, indicating that these essential community kitchens will soon be unable to provide meals. Israel halted aid on March 2 and resumed military operations shortly thereafter to exert pressure on Hamas for the release of hostages.According to international law, Israel is required to enable supplies for the 2.1 million residents of Gaza. However, Israel claims compliance with the law, asserting that there is no shortage of aid. By the end of March, all 25 bakeries supported by WFP in the region shut down due to a lack of wheat flour and cooking fuel. Food parcels, which were meant to provide two weeks' rations for families, have also been depleted.Malnutrition has rapidly escalated, with recent screenings revealing a significant rise in acute malnutrition cases among children. The UN's humanitarian affairs office highlighted acute shortages of medical supplies and increasing difficulties in providing water due to fuel shortages. The WFP indicated that the longest blockade in Gaza's history is severely undermining fragile markets and food security, leading to soaring prices—up to 1,400% higher than during the ceasefire. Among the worst affected are vulnerable groups like children under five, pregnant women, and the elderly. The situation, the WFP states, has reached a breaking point, with civilians lacking basic means of survival, prompting urgent calls to open borders for humanitarian support.More than 116,000 tonnes of food aid is currently positioned at the borders, ready to be delivered once access is permitted. WFP Country Director Antoine Renard shared insights into the plight of the displaced population, highlighting that over 80% have been uprooted by ongoing conflict. Despite the necessity of community kitchens, they are only reaching half of the population and covering only 25% of daily food needs. On the ground, individuals are resorting to desperate measures, trading personal items for food or begging at unprecedented levels as the scarcity of resources intensifies. In response to international criticism, the Israeli foreign ministry defended its blockade, asserting that sufficient aid has been delivered during the ceasefire period and denying obligation to facilitate aid, claiming that Hamas misappropriates supplies for its military objectives. Meanwhile, an ongoing military campaign against Hamas was initiated after a deadly cross-border assault that resulted in substantial casualties. As protests continue and calls for the end of the blockade amplify, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, emphasizing the urgent need for immediate aid access.
