In brief
In an exceptional performance, Monty, a five-year-old giant schnauzer, emerged victorious at the renowned Westminster Kennel Club dog show held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This marked a historic win as Monty not only became the first giant schnauzer to secure the Best in Show title but also ended a long wait for the Working Group, which had not seen a champion since 2004.
The event featured over 200 breeds competing for their respective group titles before the selection of the overall winner. After a series of impressive preliminary rounds, Monty's triumph was celebrated by his owner Katie Bernardin, who proudly remarked, "The puppy did the damn thing." A total of 2,500 dogs participated, with Monty standing out as a top competitor.Judge Paula Nykiel, herself a dog breeder and handler, praised Monty's exemplary traits, which fell in line with the breed standards. Among the competition, notable contenders included Bourbon the whippet, who came in as runner-up, as well as finalists Comet the shih tzu, Mercedes the German shepherd, and Neal the bichon frise. With the dog show being the second-longest sporting event in the US, dating back 149 years, Monty's win is a significant milestone celebrated in the dog-loving community. Looking ahead, as the Westminster dog show continues its tradition of crowning champions, fans eagerly await next year's event.
