Christa Pike’s prognosis remains unclear after a failed execution on Wednesday, with her lawyer saying she is critically ill in a Nashville hospital.
Lawyer Stephen Ferrell told CNN that doctors are still working to clear two doses of pentobarbital from her body while monitoring her severe condition.
Pike, 50, was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19‑year‑old Colleen Slemmer and survived two execution attempts before being transferred to a hospital.
Ferrell noted that Pike has not regained consciousness, yet he has not been allowed in to see her, speaking only through a medical power of attorney.
Governors in Tennessee have suspended all executions for the remainder of the year following the incident, and the state prison chief announced his resignation.
The lawyer called for a commutation at a minimum, citing the torturous attempt and Pike’s 30‑year solitary confinement history.
Her conviction followed a media frenzy in Knoxville, and the execution move advanced despite last‑minute legal challenges, leaving Pike’s fate and legal future in limbo.
