Barbed‑Wire Shielding Around West Bank School Amid Rising Settler Attacks
In the isolated village of al‑Mughayyir, north‑east of Ramallah, parents have encircled a primary school with barbed‑wire fencing to protect students from an upsurge of Israeli settler violence.
The village has been increasingly surrounded by Jewish settler outposts, and a makeshift Israeli checkpoint is often stationed at the entrance. Local residents fear that the barrier will keep both settlement forces and guerrilla fighters from approaching the school grounds.
Six people, including three pupils, have been killed in al‑Mughayyir this year in a surge of settler‑related attacks. One of them, 14‑year‑old Aws al‑Naasan, was shot dead by a settler outside the school gates in April.
All Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law, and many of the small ad‑hoc outposts around al‑Mughayyir are also illegal under Israeli law.
