The Israeli military says its air force has carried out its most powerful strike in Yemen in response to the Houthi movement's repeated drone and missile attacks on Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that dozens of its aircraft bombed targets belonging to the Houthis' security and intelligence services and military in the capital Sanaa. The Houthi-run government's health ministry has denounced what it called Israel's brutal crime, asserting that civilian facilities and residential buildings were among the targets, resulting in eight casualties.
This offensive comes shortly after a Houthi drone attack injured 22 people, including two seriously, in the Israeli Red Sea resort of Eilat. The Houthis have maintained control over much of north-western Yemen for a decade, following the ousting of the country's internationally recognized government, which led to a prolonged civil war.
The conflict escalated further after they began attacking Israeli and international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in solidarity with the Palestinians following the outbreak of fighting in Gaza. Israel has since responded with several airstrikes in Yemen as a form of retaliation for the Houthi strikes.
Videos from Sanaa captured billowing smoke from various locations following the strikes. Israel’s Defence Minister stated that the operation focused on “numerous terror targets” related to the Houthis. The IDF has asserted its commitment to protecting Israeli citizens from ongoing Houthi attacks and has warned of more military actions to come. The ongoing conflict has further exacerbated the humanitarian situation in Yemen, already devastated by years of war.
