Actor Sam Neill Succumbs to Pneumonia at 78, Agent Confirms

Sam Neill, the celebrated New Zealand actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park and a standout in the BBC drama Peaky Blinders, died on Monday at a Sydney hospital after pneumonia, his agent confirmed.

Neill, who was 78, had previously battled non‑Hodgkin lymphoma and announced his remission in April, remaining cancer‑free until his passing. His agent Philip Grenz issued a statement clarifying the cause of death, addressing earlier media inaccuracies.

During the past year Neill filmed four projects that will release in the coming months, a testament to his enduring energy and commitment to his craft. He was described by his family as an intensely private man who disliked publicity.

The actor’s family will hold a private memorial on his farm in New Zealand at a later date. Both fans and fellow actors honoured him: Laura Dern called him a “beloved lifetime friend”; Toni Collette named him a hero, legend, and sweetheart; and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon praised him as one of the greats.

Neill’s filmography spans over 150 screen credits, with notable titles such as The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, and the Netflix series Untamed. He is expected to make posthumous appearances in films like Godzilla x Kong: Supernova (2027) and The Last Resort (2027).

In his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, Neill reflected on his cancer journey, stating he was “not afraid of dying… I really enjoy living.” He viewed his life as an adventure, even in its darker hours.
