In brief

In Sloviansk, a frontline city in Ukraine, the desire for normalcy persists despite the chaos of war. Serhii Kovalov, a restaurant owner, has bravely taken on the challenge of providing fresh sushi, a beloved food item in Ukraine, to locals and soldiers alike. As Russian forces intensify their approach, Kovalov remains committed to serving his community, ensuring that the comfort of a flavorful meal transcends the bleak reality surrounding them.

Serhii Kovalov doesn’t fancy sushi, nor does the chef at his restaurant. Yet, amid the peril of artillery strikes and dwindling supplies, he has embraced the culinary necessity demanded by his patrons in Sloviansk, a city perilously close to the front lines of the ongoing conflict. Despite the fear of escalating attacks, Kovalov refuses to abandon his post. Since Russia began its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, life in Sloviansk has changed dramatically, but the desire for sushi has only grown stronger. Just over three years into the conflict, locals continue to flock to Slavnyi Horod, Kovalov's eatery, to find a slice of comfort in every roll.Kovalov shares a steadfast resolve, emphasizing, “I know I’m needed here.” His ambition has turned his restaurant, once lacking sushi on the menu, into a hub of culture and resilience amidst the horrors of war, bringing a taste of normalcy to those who dare to defy the fear that looms over them daily.
