In brief

In early February, two hikers in the Krkonose Mountains in the Czech Republic stumbled upon an extraordinary hoard of treasure, igniting curiosity regarding its origin.

While hiking in the foothills of the Krkonose Mountains, two Czech hikers made an incredible discovery—an aluminum can peeking out from a stone wall. Inside, they found 598 gold coins meticulously arranged and wrapped in black fabric. According to Miroslav Novak, head of the archaeological department at the Museum of Eastern Bohemia, this remarkable find marks a significant moment for historians and treasure seekers alike.A further dig near the first discovery revealed a metal box packed with additional treasures: 16 snuffboxes, 10 bracelets, a comb, a chain holding a small key, and a powder compact. The collective worth of these items is staggering, with estimates reaching as high as $680,000.Dr. Novak noted that particularly intriguing about this treasure is the recency of its burial. Unlike many archaeological finds in the region that date back to ancient times, the most recent coin in this collection was minted in 1921. This timing suggests the stash was buried within the last century, raising questions about its previous owner and the circumstances surrounding its concealment. The excavation of this treasure trove has sparked excitement among both historians and amateur treasure hunters, who are now piecing together clues that may lead to the mystery of who buried this valuable cache.
