In brief

In Gothenburg, three men have been sentenced for their involvement in the murder of hip-hop artist C Gambino, shot in 2024. Despite convictions, the investigation remains complicated by ongoing gang violence and the lack of a recovered murder weapon.

Three men aged between 20 and 22 have received lengthy prison sentences after being found guilty of aiding the murder of acclaimed Swedish hip-hop artist C Gambino, whose real name was Karar Ramadan, in Gothenburg last year. The young artist was awarded the title of hip-hop artist of 2023 at Sweden’s Grammis music awards just one month before his life was tragically cut short in a premeditated shooting at a parking garage. The Gothenburg court convicted all three men of aiding and abetting homicide, yet two were acquitted of directly committing the murder due to the inability to ascertain who fired the fatal shots. The murder weapon remains elusive, with investigators yet to recover the gun used in the attack; a vehicle linked to the incident was later found set ablaze.C Gambino’s death has been attributed to an ongoing gang conflict in the region, although officials have not provided concrete evidence connecting him to criminal activities. Sadly, gang violence has escalated in Sweden’s largest cities over recent years, leading to numerous fatalities, including the involvement of minors in violent crimes. The rapper, aged 26, was attacked as he returned to his vehicle in a multistorey car park in June 2024, which the court described as an orchestrated act of violence. Despite managing to signal for help, emergency services faced communication difficulties upon their arrival, ultimately leading to his death shortly after at the hospital. The sentences delivered by the court included a life term for one man, while the other two were handed 15 and a half years and 12 and a half years, respectively. Additionally, a fourth accomplice, aged 19, received charges for setting fire to the vehicle used in the crime. This case coincides with another disturbing incident in southern Sweden where a 14-year-old boy was found guilty of a gang-related murder, but due to his age, will not face any legal penalties. Recent developments in combating gang violence saw authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan arresting a significant figure associated with a notorious gang involved in multiple killings in Sweden.
