As Margaryta puts on child-sized body armor and an orange helmet, her surroundings are filled with the sounds of artillery in the distance. The 12-year-old was forced to leave Novoolenivka, her beloved village, and her father, who chose to stay behind to guard their home. This painful goodbye felt final for Margaryta, who later joined millions of civilians displaced in Ukraine's Donetsk region due to the ongoing war.

Despite reaching a temporary refuge in western Ukraine, the young girl soon reported severe pain, leading doctors to diagnose her with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer predominantly affecting children. Now situated in Kyiv, Margaryta’s battle extends beyond the war to her health, as her mother, Liudmyla, emphasizes, "The only thing that matters now is saving my child’s life."

Their escape reunited them with Margaryta's father, and although Kyiv provides critical medical care, it bears the scars of the war—including the destruction of a key children's hospital by a missile strike last July. The family's shared struggle underscores not just the devastating impact of conflict but also the relentless spirit of hope and resilience as they navigate through these harrowing times together.
