In brief

As the city recovers from devastating fires, officials warn of dangerous winds that could hinder relief efforts and heighten the risk of further destruction.

Los Angeles is bracing for another round of strong winds that may undermine the progress firefighters have achieved in extinguishing recent devastating wildfires. Officials have issued a fire-danger alert, effective today through tomorrow afternoon, predicting that the most intense gusts will occur during this window. Last week, similar wind conditions contributed to the outbreak of the Eaton fire, which has heavily impacted Altadena, Pasadena, and the Pacific Palisades area.In response to the impending threat, fire crews are mobilizing to protect at-risk areas, aiming to curb potential damage. While the anticipated winds may not reach the ferocity of last week’s gusts, officials express concern about their prolonged duration, which could escalate the fire risk. The Eaton fire has tragically claimed at least 16 lives, marking it as one of California’s deadliest wildfires. Additionally, the Palisades fire has resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals, with 23 others reported missing. Authorities caution that these figures may rise as search and rescue operations continue. Currently, around 92,000 people are living under evacuation orders, a decrease from over 100,000 just days prior. The ongoing fires have wreaked havoc on more than 12,000 structures, including homes, vehicles, and outbuildings, raising concerns about the scale of destruction and the safety of residents in affected communities.
