In brief

The trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs continues as the jury in New York deliberates a partial verdict but struggles with a pivotal racketeering charge that could lead to life imprisonment.

The jury deliberating in the federal trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs will extend their discussions after achieving a partial verdict but failing to reach an agreement on the critical racketeering charge against the music mogul. At the federal courthouse in New York, the twelve jurors confirmed they had settled on four of the five counts; however, the contentious racketeering charge, which carries a potential life sentence, remained unresolved. The courtroom atmosphere was charged with tension, as Combs, 55, appeared somber, often bowing his head and folding his hands in his lap, while defense lawyers offered him reassurance. After two days of deliberation, the jury officially reported progress at around 4:30 PM EDT on Tuesday but wasn't able to resolve the most severe allegation. Presiding Judge Arun Subramanian considered the situation, hearing arguments from both sides on how to advance, eventually encouraging the jury to persist. The prosecution proposed the use of an Allen charge — a method intended to motivate jurores to reach a unanimous decision — sparking concerns that it could exert undue pressure on jurors to conform to majority opinions. The jury’s foreperson later communicated to the judge that they would break for the day and reconvene on Wednesday, with potential deliberation continuing into July 3rd, just before the Independence Day holiday in the U.S. Over the past two months, the jury has heard testimonies from 34 witnesses, including ex-girlfriends, former employees, male escorts, and federal agents. The defendant, also known by several monikers—including Puffy, Puff Daddy, and Brother Love—has established himself as a prominent figure in the music industry, releasing his fifth album "The Love Album: Off The Grid" earlier this year and receiving his first solo Grammy nomination. Additionally, he was honored as a Global Icon at the MTV Awards.
