Pope Conclave Oath Ceremony Begins in Vatican City

Inside the iconic Sistine Chapel, cardinals have gathered to take an oath as a crucial step in the conclave process for electing the next pope. Following the guidelines established by Pope John Paul II in a 1996 document, the 133 cardinals solemnly repeat the oath read by the most senior cardinal. This commitment binds them not only to uphold the rules but also to ensure the successor to St. Peter will carry out the mission with integrity, defending the rights and liberties of the Holy See.The atmosphere is charged with reverence as each cardinal, placing a hand on the Bible, vows not to reveal the proceedings or be swayed by outside influences. They pledge that all details of the voting process will be kept confidential and that any notes taken will be destroyed—an effort to maintain the sanctity of the election. However, history shows that snippets of these confidential discussions may emerge, revealing the complexities behind the decision-making during the conclave.Once the final cardinal has taken the oath, the master of papal liturgical celebrations, Diego Ravelli, will announce “extra omnes,” signaling the beginning of a private voting process that is, in many ways, a pivotal moment for the direction of the Catholic Church. As this sacred event unfolds, reporters closely monitor the developments in hopes of unveiling the insights beyond the chapel walls, contributing to the ongoing narrative of papal elections. Elisabetta Povoledo, a seasoned journalist, continues to report on the unfolding events from Vatican City, where tradition and modern intrigue collide within the sacred walls.
