In brief
The recent uproar over sanitary pads in China highlights ongoing quality issues and broader grievances among women.
In China, a growing discontent has emerged among consumers regarding the lengths of sanitary pads after women took to social media to reveal that many products fell short of their advertised sizes. Prominent manufacturers are now issuing apologies as videos showing this discrepancy went viral, igniting a wave of outrage across Chinese platforms.A significant investigation by The Paper into over 20 different sanitary pad brands revealed that around 90% of the products measured at least 10mm shorter than what was claimed on their packaging. These findings prompted conversations about the quality and safety of sanitary pads, a staple necessity for many women in the country. On November 3, a user on Xiaohongshu showcased nine popular brands, measuring them and concluding that they all inconsistently met the stated dimensions. She provocatively questioned whether manufacturers were prioritizing profit over consumer satisfaction. This issue has resonated deeply among consumers who expressed their disbelief on platforms like Weibo. Posts criticising the discrepancy likened the false advertising to other forms of deceit prevalent in the market. "The inflated sanitary pad length is just like the insoles under men’s feet," remarked one user, reflecting the wider sentiment of being short-changed.In response to the backlash, companies like ABC issued statements of apology, acknowledging the inappropriate initial response to customer complaints regarding product sizes. The brand committed to making improvements and aiming for "zero deviation" from advertised lengths. Other companies, including Shecare and Beishute, followed suit, recognizing the gravity of the situation and promising enhancements.Chinese state media further fuelling the conversation stressed that the quality of sanitary pads is crucial for the health and comfort of women. "As a daily necessity for women, quality of sanitary pads is directly related to the health and comfort of the user," stated an article by Xinhua, indicating the serious implications of the quality issues discovered.Sanitary pads represent a crucial part of the feminine hygiene market in China, valued at an estimated $13 billion, yet this controversy serves as a reminder of past safety concerns linked to such products. Incidents involving counterfeit sanitary towels and health hazards within manufacturing processes underscore the importance of maintaining high standards in women’s products. The collective response to the sanitary pad situation encapsulates deeper frustrations women encounter regarding the quality and consideration of products designed for them. Social media hashtags like "Is it that hard for sanitary pads to tackle women’s needs?" and "Sanitary pads yield a centimetre; women yield for a lifetime" have emerged, reflecting the sentiments many carry regarding their everyday necessities.
