In brief
In a chilling turn of events, the United Arab Emirates has imposed death sentences on three men for their involvement in the shocking murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, a member of the Israeli Moldovan Jewish community, last November. The ruling comes amidst heightened anxiety regarding the protection and security of the UAE's burgeoning Jewish population.
On the 31st of March 2025, the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals’ State Security Chamber declared the verdict, labelling the offense as "premeditated murder with terrorist intention." The UAE’s state news outlet, WAM, reported the court’s decision without disclosing specific details about the incident that led to such a grave punishment. A fourth accomplice was handed down a life sentence, followed by deportation but the specifics of their involvement also remain unclear. The individuals sentenced have been identified as Olimboy Tohirovich and Makhmudjon Abdurakhim, both aged 28, and Azizbek Kamilovich, 33, all hailing from Uzbekistan. They were previously extradited from Turkey after being accused of the crime. Evidence presented in court included their prior confessions, forensic findings, and testimonials from witnesses.Though the prosecution provided substantial evidence against the accused, including post-mortem reports and the methods used in the crime, the authorities have yet to disclose the motives behind the brutal murder of the 28-year-old rabbi, nor the exact circumstances surrounding his abduction and death.
