In brief

In the wake of Israeli airstrikes and retaliatory actions from Iran, an urgent flight from Tehran has begun, with residents struggling to navigate fuel shortages and communication breakdowns.

As tensions rise in Iran following Israeli airstrikes on various cities, many residents are searching for safe passage out of the capital. Meisam, a 41-year-old poet from Tehran, decided to leave the city late Sunday night, joining a mass exodus of citizens fleeing in fear for their lives. Driving towards his hometown in East Azerbaijan Province, he endured long waits at gas stations, where the fuel supply is dwindling drastically. In an atmosphere of uncertainty and dread, Meisam described his journey through streets shrouded in smoke from ongoing explosions, saying, “Everything’s uncertain.” The surge in panic has escalated after Israel launched surprise attacks that have reportedly killed over 200 people in Iran and injured more than 1,400, with retaliatory strikes from Iran resulting in casualties in Israel as well.In a dire warning that underscored the precarious situation, the Israeli military issued an evacuation order for a significant portion of northeastern Tehran, indicating intentions to target “military infrastructure” in those areas soon after. However, with internet and mobile services severely impacted, many residents may not have received this critical information in time.Amid this turmoil, residents have also reported that gas stations are closing due to fuel shortages, and those that remain operational have implemented strict limits on how much fuel can be dispensed, often capping the sale at 10 liters per vehicle. The overall atmosphere conveys a sense of impending doom as uncertainty grips the city and residents scramble to flee a conflict that shows no signs of abating.
