In brief
In the wake of a devastating mass shooting in Orebro that tragically claimed at least 10 lives, Sweden's government announced plans to implement stricter gun control measures. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson labeled the attack, which occurred at an adult education center, as the nation's worst mass shooting to date. The government's new legislative proposals, already in progress from earlier inquiries, aim to fortify the existing regulations surrounding firearms.
Although not finalized, the proposed legislation seeks to enhance the criteria for obtaining gun licenses. This includes a thorough evaluation by law enforcement of applicants' age, knowledge of weapon usage, and assessing any criminal or medical history. Additionally, access to semiautomatic weapons, particularly AR-15-style rifles that have recently been allowed for hunting purposes, will be more tightly regulated under the new rules. The government emphasized that gun possession laws must strike a balance between preventing crime and accidents while maintaining individual rights for justified firearm ownership. Prime Minister Kristersson stated, “We want to ensure that only the right people have guns in Sweden,” during a visit to Latvia, reinforcing the government's commitment to preventing future tragedies and ensuring the safety of Swedish citizens.
