In brief
In a significant development in South Africa's rising gun violence crisis, a man has been charged with the murder of 18 family members following a mass shooting during a family gathering last month.
Weeks after a brutal mass shooting where 18 family members were gunned down in a rural Eastern Cape Province village, 45-year-old Siphosoxolo Myekethe has been charged with their murders. The shooting on Sept. 28 shocked the small town of Lusikisiki, highlighting the disturbing trend of mass shootings targeting communal and family gatherings in South Africa. Myekethe was arrested on Monday, approximately eight miles from the crime scene, and has been charged with 18 counts of murder alongside illegal gun possession. His criminal past includes previous murder convictions and legal escape, and at the time of arrest, he was on parole. During his brief court appearance, Myekethe did not enter a plea and is scheduled for a bail hearing next Tuesday, with prosecutors opposing bail. Authorities are continuing their investigation and searching for additional suspects potentially linked to the attack. The attack occurred early on Sept. 28 when gunmen attacked two homesteads, killing 13 people at one site and another person later in a hospital, while elsewhere, four residents were killed, including a young boy. Six survivors, among them a 2-month-old, were reported. The recent rise in murder rates in South Africa, especially due to gun violence, has prompted increased law enforcement efforts, leading to the seizure of over 430 illegal firearms in the last four months.
