In brief
Tropical Storm Trami made a destructive entrance in Vietnam on Sunday, having already caused significant destruction in the Philippines, where it resulted in the deaths of over 80 people. The storm is now threatening Vietnam's central coast with heavy rainfall and flooding, raising alarms for potential landslides and further casualties.
Tropical Storm Trami has made landfall near Danang, Vietnam, on Sunday, just days after delivering a brutal blow to the Philippines that left at least 80 fatalities. The storm's winds reached speeds of up to 55 miles per hour, falling short of hurricane classification as it traversed the South China Sea en route to Vietnam. Philippine officials noted that aside from the tragic loss of life, 66 individuals were injured, and 34 people are still unaccounted for.As Trami approached the central Vietnamese city, authorities warned of imminent risks including flooding and coastal landslides. Predictions indicate that some regions south of Danang could receive an astonishing 16 inches of rain by Monday night. In preparation for the storm's arrival, flight operations at several airports, including Danang International Airport, were initially halted but resumed operations shortly after. Before making landfall, Trami wreaked havoc across multiple provinces in the Philippines, displacing over 500,000 residents, damaging nearly 28,000 homes, and causing widespread power outages in over 150 municipalities. Many areas remained inaccessible to relief workers due to floodwaters, complicating rescue efforts. In addition to Trami, another storm named Kong-rey was reported nearing the Philippines with similar wind speeds, expected to impact Luzon, the country's most densely populated island. Following this, it is projected to move toward Japan’s Ryukyu Islands. The recent storms underscore the heightened vulnerability of this region, which has faced severe weather patterns that have resulted in significant humanitarian crises, including Typhoon Yagi, which previously claimed the lives of at least 49 people across Vietnam after devastating areas in China and the Philippines.
